waking up

Hello out there... How is everybody?, I have been through a lot in the last few months. Doing very well now though... I have a great job now in wilmington. long story.

I am working on having an art show in the downtown wilmington area with a friend of mine, (fellow illustrator amoung us). I want to invite him to post here.

I was thinking -- I'm just beginning with it, but I want to get some input on some new stuff I am working on. These paintings will be more abstract, I'm experimenting with some new subject matter and sketching objects as well as rendering type etc...

Anyway I have missed you all and I am looking forward to more posts and involvement with what we have going here. good to be back. are any of you guys going to the academy this year?

Hey Kim!! It's so good to see you on the blog! I hope you and your family are doing well, and I'm glad to hear that you like your job. :) That's always nice when that happens.
I really like this painting. I think the really vibrant colors go well with your loose drawing style. I really love the kind of rosey color you used behind the tree, it really captures the kind of warmth that's present in a sunset. the painting reminds me a little of the really famous portrait illustrator that Cat liked so much. The guy that did the really huge colorful portraits....what's his name?? The only thing that's a little distracting to me is the heavy dark line dividing the page. I think if you brought a little more darkness to the bottom (tree) than it might divide less. But then I really love the way the tree looks as it is! Really nice piece, and so good to hear from you :)

woops! I just read the title of the post. the color is the kinda warmth present in a sunrise! I've seen many more sunsets, than rises...so I think I relate to those quicker.

Oh damn, I just typed out a whole bunch of stuff then accidentally closed the window. Damn damn.

Anyway: I heard Perry is going back, and I think Matt Starbuck is too. Matt, you still out there? Hello? I can't go back, now that I have a full time job again there's no way I could get that much time off. Maybe next summer.

So about the painting: I agree with Sarah that your loose sketch style and the vibrant colors really look great together. I also agree that the black lines really detract from the delicacy of your line work. I think you actually have 3 pretty successful pieces in one: The tree totally works on its own, same with the birds and the "no surf zone" sign, and also the abstract stuff you have going on on top. There is probably a deeper reason for integrating all of these elements though, so maybe it would work better if they just flowed into each other a bit more.

I'm glad you are happy with your new job! Hopefully it gives you more time to do your own creative work. Keep on posting it here, we love seeing it!
