Academy - Week Two (in Progress)

It doesn't look like we're going to get access to the lab and the large scanner... so here's a bad photo of the first assignment.

Week Two's assignment for CF Payne is a portrait for the NY Times Book Review. I'll let you all guess who this is. I'm still experimenting with cardboard as a painting/drawing surface. I think Gary Kelley is coming for next week.

Tyler,
I just sent you an email and here is the work. Seriously very nice, great job. Did you get a good response for the crits? and the concept portrait is very good looking too. I think you have a great handle on the value pattern! I feel I am still struggling but it is getting more natural for me. Am old dog - new tricks, you know.
Ok I am happy for you!

Hey Tyler looking good! The conceptual portrait looks great. It's James Lipton! Did you ever watch Arrested Development?? He had a small part in there for a while and was really funny. I like the pattern you used in the "slice of life" one too!

I love the colors in the "slice of life" piece, very cool. And the portrait looks fantastic too, can't wait to see the final! It blows about the computer lab; even though it didn't always work the greatest, it still came in VERY handy! Oh how I miss it there.... Are the love bugs out in full force?

i think i may have figured this stuff out now. darn google password and crap. anyway, Tyler, it is nice to see new stuff. I am infinitely jealous that you are attending the academy again. SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE. as far as the work goes, i see a lot that i like. the slice of life piece is pretty strong. Great puzzle for a dumb guy. nice big shapes of value. the size of that kid lends a lot to a piece about "a slice of american youth" but that is another comment.
the portrait, from what i can tell is spot on. I knew who it was right away and immediately thought of the time i saw him singing praises to Tom Cruise. oh beautiful. keep up the good work man, i hope to see much much more.

Thanks, All, for the comments!

Great to "see" you Chris! It's been a while.

The Academy is great. It's good to have Exploding Wednesdays and Double Fridays again.
